Strategies and tools for working with men and boys to end violence against girls, boys, women and other men

27 participants representing various organisations in South Asia participated in the workshop aimed at developing “Strategies and Tools for Working with Men and Boys to end Violence against Girls, Boys, Women and other Men”. The workshop was jointly organised by UNIFEM South Asia office and Save the Children Sweden, Regional Programme for South and Central Asia. The workshop didn’t just discuss violence; rather it built upon on the theory of why some men/boys use violence, selectively. The workshop explored the theory of gender and emphasised on the importance of including men/boys within it. Linkage of gender to both men/boys and women/girls was explored. The participants undertook an exercise on stereotyping or “fitting in a box’, which drew attention to what society considers appropriate for a man/boy and a woman/girl. The exercise also shed light on the authority and power given to one sex over the other.

Capturing change in women's realities

In this document, we attempt to interrogate such assumptions in the context of women’s rights / gender equality / women’s empowerment work, where M&E approaches create particular kinds of challenges. Part I provides a critique of current M&E frameworks as experienced by women’s organizations and movements worldwide, and attempts to articulate some principles and attributes that can engender our M&E approaches. Part II offers a compendium of a large number of M&E frameworks and tools, along with a critical  analysis of some of their strengths and weaknesses in assessing women’s rights and gender equality processes and impacts.

Symchronising Gender Strategies

A Cooperative Model for Improving Reproductive Health and Transforming Gender Relations. With this concept paper, it is the intention of the authors and the Interagency Gender Working Group (IGWG) to take gender transformation to the next step, to what we have communally termed “gender synchronization.” By gender synchronization we mean working with men and women, boys and girls, in an intentional and mutually reinforcing way that challenges gender norms, catalyzes the achieve- ment of gender equality, and improves health. The audience we hope to engage in this dialogue in- cludes reproductive health and development practitioners and program planners—many of whom are already integrating gender into their programming and are looking for the most effective approaches to achieving better reproductive health and long-term change.

In this issue of Capacity.org, we look at the capacities that local governments need to address gender inequalities effectively. We look specifically at the issue of decentralisation, which increases the power of local governments and, by extension, their capacity to boost gender equality.
